Jaimini Upadeśa-sūtras

Maharṣi Jaimini · 16 sections — 4 adhyāyas × 4 pādas, ≈584 sūtras. The aphorisms are deliberately terse; this reader gives topic outlines with one fair-use sūtra per pāda. B. Suryanarain Rao (1933) translation as baseline.

opening sūtra

अथ कारकाणाम् सप्तदश-विधं वक्ष्ये।

atha kārakāṇām saptadaśa-vidhaṃ vakṣye

Now I shall set forth the seventeen-fold karaka-classification.

adhyāya 1 · pāda 1section 1 / 1650 sūtras

प्रथमाध्यायः · प्रथमपादःPrathamādhyāya · Prathama-pādaFoundations — Cāra, Karakas, Pada

Opening sūtras introduce the saptadaśa-kāraka (seventeen-fold karaka) — Ātma, Amātya, Bhrātṛ, Mātṛ, Putra, Jñāti, Dāra, plus the bhāva-significators 5, 7, 8 etc. The Ātma-Kāraka is defined as the graha with the highest degree in any sign (in some traditions, in any rāśi excluding Rāhu). The pāda also introduces special-lagnas (ārūḍha, upapada) and Cāra-rāśi-daśā computation.

key sūtra · Jaimini Sūtra 1.1.5 (Suryanarain Rao) · fair-use snippet

आत्म-कारकं सर्व-उच्चतमं ग्रहम्।

ātma-kārakaṃ sarva-uccatamaṃ graham |

The Ātma-Kāraka is the graha with the highest degree in any sign.

The sūtras are terse · use a printed edition with guru-paramparā commentary for full study · no predictions made here.
